Signs and Symptoms of Child Sexual Abuse

CAUTION: Beware of over-zealous identification. One or two of the signs may not indicate child sexual abuse. Take your child to a medical professional if you observe multiple signs that your child may have been sexually abused.

  • Disclosure by child (very rare).
  • Excessive masturbation.
  • Sexual acting out with other children.
  • Bedwetting and soiling (after potty training).
  • Nightmares.
  • Abrupt change in behavior, uncharacteristic anger, isolation or withdrawal.
  • Age-inappropriate knowledge of sex.
  • Constantly talks about sex.
  • Constant vaginal discharge.
  • Physical evidence (very rare).
  • Venereal disease.
  • Difficulty walking or sitting.
  • Sleeps too much or too little.
  • Depression, crying over insignificant matters.
  • Fear of bathroom.
  • Fear of a certain person.
  • Excessive crying.
  • Exhibiting violent behavior.
  • Wearing many layers of clothing.
  • Bleeding in vagina or anus.
